This New Year

It seems fitting that my LAST blog post was in regard to the Lunar New Year of the Snake in February 2013. To say this past year was a wild ride may be an understatement, I am in the process of deep transition from one who works a day job and sees clients and takes business courses to someone who works for themselves after weeding through 2 1/2 months of burn-out after leaving said day job.

My new year’s commitment encompasses expansion through building community, vulnerability by putting myself out there in the world {hello, blog!}, resilience as we each have a remarkable story to tell of triumph, serving folks in need of creating big shifts in their lives, and re-learning what those things are that make me happy.

So, without further ado…

What makes you happy?

I’d love to read your response in the comments below.

Lunar New Year of the Snake

What skin are you shedding this year? What habits are no longer working in your life that you want to change up? What will you eliminate in order to illuminate the life you want to be living?

Personally, I am reducing time at my day job in order to make space for my life’s work of illuminating clients’ life’s paths and strengthen the connection between a mother and her unborn baby. This possibility has already allowed space for the planning of a Reiki training workshop co-facilitated with a fellow Reiki Master. I can now also see a time when my coffee table (which my spouse refers to as “my island”) is clutter free because I will have two days off per week.

And I will be writing more about this in the coming weeks as I am so fascinated by the story – Ray Lewis announced his retirement from football on January 2, 2013 four days prior to their first play-off game as wildcards and the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl on February 3, 2013. He created the space for opportunity just as the Ravens has lost the last four of five games in regular season play – as my father, a native Baltimorean, was cursing the quarterback’s ability  — possibility happened. Space was freed up. Something new and inspiring occurred.

Last year, I took a leap of faith and signed-up for what I thought at the time was an expensive online marketing program called Rich, Hot, and Happy B-School. It felt right. At the core of my being I knew that this would change things up.  And it did. Over the eight weeks of the course, I met the most amazing group of energetic, supportive, thoughtful women all while learning about profit clarity, customer profiles, websites, newsletters, marketing, and copywriting.

To get a feel of Marie Forleo’s magnificent flair for online business, view her free videos she has produced to launch the upcoming session of B-School. Next week, I’ll share the package I am offering if you sign-up for B-School using my affiliate link.

I am so excited for this year of the snake and to see the possibility that you create in your life.

Tell me what’s not working and how you are going to change things up this year below in the comments.

A calm in the storm

With all the information coming at us from so many different directions, it’s a wonder we know who we are anymore. And in many ways, we don’t.

Last October, I was in the process of receiving my master level Reiki attunement while my soul (higher self) was on the plane of enlightenment and learned that I had been a practitioner of an auric field healing modality that was used from Mesopotamia to Coptic times in which I had reincarnated three times. I also learned that a dear friend was also a practitioner during that time as well as now. I was blown away by this knowledge. And my immediate reaction after the initial state of bliss had settled was to Google it.

Here I had just had this intense metaphysical experience, learned profound information about my soul’s past experience that I knew to my core to be true, and found the need to Google it so that I could prove that this healing modality existed. A healing modality that I had started using in the here and now because my hand just started moving that way during the most profound healing of my career thus far while at ShamanDome at Burning Man just two months prior. I knew it worked on the layers of the auric field and I still Googled it.

WOW. I am still shocked at myself. Mainly because I was questioning the existence of my personal experience over the internet. The internet which provides false information on a daily basis but somehow feels real as it is tupe on a screen. Most information hasn’t even been vetted on the internet but somehow type equals book equals vetted.

We all get lost sometimes in this technological modern world. Does it make you feel out of sorts too?

A great way to get back in touch with our higher self is to ground in the earth’s energy. And here is a grounding mediation to do just that.

Grounding Meditation (click for audio file)

Imagine that there are roots – energetic roots – growing out of the bottoms of your feet. Theses roots go through the floor, through the foundation of the building you are in, through the Earth’s crust and it’s many layers for miles and miles and miles until these roots reach the Earth’s core. The Earth’s core is a molten mass of energy.

Once there, your energetic roots drink in the Earth’s core energy which travels up your roots through the many layers of Earth for many many miles. The bottoms of your feet can feel this energy coming and then it enters the soles of your feet, and moves to your toes and your ankles, your calves, your knees, your thighs, your hips, your pelvis, up your spine, your intestines, your stomach, your pancreas and lungs. It moves into your heart and liver and kidneys, your chest, your shoulders. It travels down your arms, elbows, forearms, wrists, palms of your hands, fingers, thumbs, fingertips. The Earth’s energy moves into your neck, your throat, your thyroid, your mouth, your sinuses, your nose, your ears, your eyes, your brain.

Take a deep breath and inhale more of the Earth’s energy into your body. Exhale.

Sit within this Earth energy. Luxuriate in her glow.

Raised by trees

I was born in the heart of Baltimore Maryland at Johns Hopkins Hospital and went to live with my parents on Tyson Street in a three-story brick 1800s row house.

My parents were upwardly mobile and obviously saving for a house as we moved within the year to a stone home bordered by trees – a greenbelt in Towson, a bedroom community outside of Baltimore. There were crab apple trees that lined one side of the street and tall trees that acted as a buffer between neighbors.

Raccoons would visit at night. Goldfish were stocked every Spring in a raised fountain/pond. Our St. Bernard, Heidi, was my daily companion. There was a cheese and veggie co-op run out of the garage. A family with eight kids and a VW Vanagon lived up the street. My brother was born. Heidi had ten puppies. All this occurred within the sanctuary of those trees.

Four years later, we moved further still from the city, to rural Maryland where my brother and I would spend the day in the woods, exploring the stream and traversing it over fallen trunks. Catching minnows, being spooked by the long abandoned shack and old cars that I could not grasp how they got there in the middle of the woods… surrounded by trees. Discovering hot springs during a snow fall on the way to a neighbor’s house and for forever those trees, looming overhead, quietly watching, taking care that we were safe.

Last winter, my husband and I started walking Discovery Park in Seattle Washington or as the Japanese call it taking “tree baths”.  The tree varieties are different but still deciduous – and they ground me. Envelop me with their sense of calm and quiet caring; their peace; their energy. Rooted. Confirmed. Alive.

Their existence harkens back to all the trees before them — of spirits, souls, animals, peoples that have occupied this space, this land.

Hearing one’s truth

Cedar from saunaWe spent the Christmas holiday on Orcas Island at Doe Bay with our days filled with hot water, hot air, no internet, and nature. My favorite spot is in the sauna with a view of a cedar tree that sits on the other side of the spring that rushes to Otter Cove. I can sit there for long stretches of time meditating on that tree, feeling its roots plunging deep into the earth as my ears open to the warmth that surrounds. This becomes especially evident on cold overcast days.

During this inward existence, the Universe began to speak of the connection of the major chakra positioned at the throat not only being of speaking one’s truth but also of hearing one’s truth and the truth of those around us.

The throat chakra is the fifth major chakra that runs along the axis from the top of the head (crown or 7th chakra) to the bottom of the spine (root or 1st chakra) with seven in total. There are also a couple thousand minor chakras or energy centers within the body but that we will save for another time.

Many clients come to me with throat chakra blocks. And since life is always in a state of flux, many of us will have a throat chakra block from time to time whether it be the ability to hear one’s truth or speak one’s truth rather than caving to the would-s, should-s, or could-s otherwise known as our expectations or the expectations we think others have of us.

Throat chakra blocks can manifest physically in jaw pain, grinding teeth, sore throats, swollen glands, thyroid issues, and, I am coming to realize, ear infections.

For me, the hearing part of the throat chakra has taken on a winning of contests theme in the last couple of months. I have literally heard “if you enter this contest, you will win” four times since November and have won three times so far. The first contest involved filling out a survey with probing questions that felt like a gift in itself as I learned much from my answers. The real gift, however, culminated in a daylong writing retreat with Pearl Klein to kick-start my blog writing block. Next up was a veggie box from Full Circle who were promoting their service at work. And just yesterday, I won four months of one-on-one coaching with Liz DiAlto… seriously, the perfect way to start the year.

In celebration of this abundance that listening has provided and the new year, I am running a contest to kickstart speaking and hearing one’s truth. Prizes include a Sweetness Herbal gift set of High Desert Sage Smudge Spray, Forest Smudge Spray, and Cedar salve; a 1-hour energy intuition session (in-person or via Skype); and a series of three 1-hour energy intuition sessions (in-person or via Skype). Energy intuition sessions which can be used by the winner(s) or gifted are to be used by April 30, 2013.

To enter, please include your name in the comments below by Sunday, January 13, at 11:59pm PDT. Three names will be drawn randomly on Monday, January 14, 2013.

And now to release those blocks in your throat chakra, a meditation for flooding it with light…

Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor. Imagine energetic roots growing out of the bottoms of your feet and traveling through the Earth’s crust down through the Earth’s layers to its core… once there, suck the Earth’s energy through your roots up into your body. Feel the Earth’s energy enter and migrate throughout your body. Inhale deeply. Exhale. Repeat.

Now, imagine a beam of light entering through the top of your head traveling through your skull. You notice the light behind your eyes, in your brain, your ears, your throat. Luxuriate in this moment. Inhale deeply; exhale. If a tone wishes to emanate, let it do so.

“I speak my truth. I hear my truth. I hear your truth.”

Stay in this space as long as you wish.

Wishing you the happiest of new years! xoxo, s
